Certificate in Special Education
Program Information
Given the increase in inclusion and the mandate for students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum to the maximum extent possible, it is likely that all educators will, at some point in their career, teach a student with disabilities.
The Graduate Certificate in Special Education is a 9-hour graduate study program designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills in meeting the needs of students with disabilities.
The program consists of three 3-credit hour courses addressing assessment, instruction, and behavior management. If, upon completion of the program, you choose to pursue a Masters' degree in special education, the three courses will transfer into our M.Ed. in Special Education.
The program emphasizes a strengths-based perspective that builds upon students' capabilities and emphasizes collaboration among key stakeholders as instrumental in ensuring positive outcomes for students with disabilities. It includes rich learning experiences who, upon completion of the program, will demonstrate an increased capacity to:
- Engage in data-based decision making
- Design differentiated instruction that builds upon learner strengths, and
- Foster positive behavior intervention supports
